Mingxi LIU, Ph.D.

Mingxi Liu, Ph.D., is a founding member of XPower, L.L.C. He is also an Associate Professor (with tenure) of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Utah. His broad R&D interests include control theory, optimization, cyber-security, and their applications in power systems, renewable energy systems, smart grid, and cyber-physical systems. He is specialized in planning and operation of smart grid, microgrid, and virtual power plant with a high penetration of distributed energy resources.

Between 2016 and 2018, Dr. Liu was an NSERC Postdoc Fellow with the Energy & Recourses Group at University of California, Berkeley. He obtained his Ph.D. and M.A.Sc degrees in mechanical engineering at the University of Victoria, Canada, in 2016 and 2018, respectively. He received B.Eng. degree in control sciences and engineering from Harbin Institute of Technology, China in 2010.

Dr. Liu is an NSF CAREER awardee, class of 2022. His work on clean energy infrastructure development in Navajo Nation was recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Energy. Dr. Liu has multiple ongoing R&D projects at the University of Utah funded by the National Science Foundation and U.S. Department of Energy focusing on developing cutting-edge control and cybersecurity solutions for high renewable penetrated power grid. Dr. Liu is a Member of IEEE. He serves as Associate Editor for IEEE Control System Society Conferences, IEEE Canadian Journal of Electrical and Computer Engineering, and IEEE Open Journal of the Industrial Electronics Society. He also serves on the Young Editorial Board of Advances in Applied Energy. Dr. Liu is a member of a non-profit organization Nááts’íilid Initiative.
